About Our Farm

In 1975 Noreen and Tim purchased 20 acres of overgrown land on Federal Hill Road in Milford at the Hollis town line.  The goal was to have a profitable operating farm and eventually future retirement income.  We have now retired from our professional careers in dental hygiene and secondary education.

We chose the name Butternut (not for the squash) for the butternut tree, a native walnut that still is found in our area.

While still working at our professional careers, we developed the farm and helped initiate farmers’ markets in Peterborough in 1977, Milford in 1978, Nashua in 1995, and Manchester in 1997.  We currently are the coordinators of the Milford and are members of the Manchester Farmers’ Market.  The Milford Farmers’ Market is one of the longest continuously running markets in NH with our motto of 32 years and still growing.

We are also committed to our community.  Noreen is a former two-term Milford Selectman and has served on the Governor’s Agriculture Advisory Board for 5 years.  She is presently President of the Milford Garden Club and serves on the NH Farmers’ Market Association board.  Tim has completed 4 terms in the NH Legislature serving on the House Environment and Agriculture Committee and recently completed 10 years on the Board of Directors of the New England Vegetable and Berry Growers Association.    Tim is now the lobbyist for S.P.A.C.E, a non-profit advocacy coalition, to protect NH’s current use law to tax farm and forest land on its’ income producing capacity.

We have two grown daughters, Jeannine (earthlingsbakedgoods.com) and Marcy (hollandfarmcsa.com), and three grandchildren.

We, at Butternut Farm, are proud of our commitment to produce high quality produce and plants following new and traditional farming practices gained from our experience as well as ongoing research from land-grant universities such as our own University of New Hampshire and others.
